Educated at Vanderbilt University (Ph.D. in History, 1976), the University of Nebraska (M.A. in Latin American Studies, 1968), and Saint Bernard College (B.A., 1965). Presently guest curator at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and consultant to a number of organizations including the Children’s Television Workshop, McGraw Hill Publishers, and the Miller Brewing Company. Has taught at the William Patterson College, Wayne N.J., Miami-Dade Community College, the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan, Tulane University, Oberlin College and Fisk University. Author of numerous publications, exhibitions and documentaries on Caribbean and Latin American history and culture. Founder and previous Director of the Cuban History and Archives Project and editor of the journal Cuban Heritage. Presently serves on the Smithsonian Institution’.s National Latino Task Force, the National Museum of American History’s Latino Initiative, as well as on several other panels for the U.S. Department of Education, the Florida Department of State, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and other organizations such as the Historical Association of South Florida (Trustee), the Historical Museum of Southern Florida (Board of Directors), the Community Relations Board of Miami Beach, the Florida Folk life Council, the Mitchell Wolfson Media History Center (Board of Advisors), the Institute of Maya Studies of the Miami Museum of Science (Trustee), the Count Galvez Historical Society (Board of Directors), the Florida Historical Confederation (Board of Directors), and the Florida Endowment of the Humanities (Advisory Committee for the project “Spanish Pathways in Florida”).
