Studied at the University of Florida (Ph.D. in Latin American Colonial History, 1988), the University of Miami (M.A. in Inter-American Studies, 1974; B.A. in Hispanic American Studies, 1968). Presently Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Vanderbilt University, with previous teaching experience at the University of Florida, Winthrop College and Central Piedmont Community College. Formerly National Director of the History Teaching Alliance (1988- 1991), Extensive and recognized research work, publications, exhibits, and documentaries on Hispanic and African colonial history and archaeology in Florida, Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean. Significant expertise in research on early Spanish colonial records, highly knowledgeable of research resources such as the Archives of the Indies in Seville and similar repositories of information in Florida and Cuba. She has already been to Cuba in relation with her work tracing the history of the Spanish settlers of Florida who returned to Cuba after the ceding of the peninsula to the British in the late 18th century. With Dr. Eugene Lyons, she is now trying to undertake a major archival research and conservation project in Cuba in the near future. Member of the American Historical Association, The Conference on Latin American History, The Association of Caribbean Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the American Society for Ethnohistory, the Florida and Georgia Historical Societies, and the St. Augustine Historical Society. Florida native born in the Dominican Republic.
