Professional education in analytical chemistry and atomic spectroscopy at Leuna-Merseburg University, Germany (Ph.D., 198.0), Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany (NLS. in analytical chemistry, 1972, and B.A in inorganic Chemistry, 1971), with extensive additional education in the fields of chemistry and architectural preservation in Austria, Spain and Cuba. One of the top experts in the world in analysis and restoration of historic materials both in architecture and art objects. Presently directs the analytical laboratory at the Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, Delaware (one of the top two in the U.S.), and teaches at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Delaware, in the latter of which he beads the. Ph.D. program in preservation science. Considerable research, publication, and teaching experience in bis field in the U.S., Germany and Cuba. Former Director of Investigations at the National Center for Conservation, Restoration and Museology (CENCREM) in Havana, Cuba (1982 to 1990), and developer as wen as and Head of the Conservation Laboratory at the same institution from 1987 to 1990. Also has considerable expertise on Cuban colonial art, and is particularly one of the most knowledgeable persons on the topic of decorative wall paintings in Cuban architecture and its preservation and restoration.
